Prepare your account and 2024 income information. The federal deadline is June 30, 2027. State and college deadlines may be earlier.\n\nThe deadlines are based on the 2026-27 FAFSA and Mississippi's September 10, 2026 notice.\n\n## Who Can Apply and What to Prepare\n\nTo receive federal aid, the student must meet the basic eligibility requirements. U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizens may qualify. Permanent residents are included among eligible noncitizens. Check the requirements other than citizenship as well.\n\n- You must be accepted for enrollment or enrolled in an eligible degree or certificate program.\n- You must meet requirements such as having a high school diploma or a recognized equivalent.\n- If you are a current student, meet your school's satisfactory academic progress standards.\n- As a rule, the student needs a valid Social Security number, or SSN.\n- Review other eligibility restrictions, such as default on a federal loan.\n\nAn SSN exception applies to some citizens of the Freely Associated States. Do not determine your eligibility for all federal aid based only on income. Some federal loans do not require a financial need assessment. You can review the basic requirements in the U.S. Department of Education's [financial aid guide](https://studentaid.gov/sa/sites/default/files/do-you-need-money.pdf).\n\n| Item to prepare | What to prepare |\n|---|---|\n| Student account | StudentAid.gov account and your contact information |\n| Contributor accounts | Separate accounts for each parent or spouse who must participate |\n| Identity information | Legal name, date of birth, SSN, or applicable identification documents |\n| Income and tax information | 2024 information for the student and required contributors |\n| Asset information | Current amounts for savings, investments, and other assets covered by the questions |\n| School information | Names or federal school codes of schools where you plan to apply or enroll |\n\nIncome and assets use different reference dates. Use 2024 information for income. For assets, the FAFSA asks for the amounts as of the date you sign it. Follow the [2026-27 FAFSA completion instructions](https://fsapartners.ed.gov/knowledge-center/fsa-handbook/2026-2027/application-and-verification-guide/ch2-filling-out-fafsa-form) for specific items.\n\n## Parent and Spouse Participation by Situation\n\nA contributor is someone who must participate in completing the FAFSA and providing consent and a signature. The English version uses the term contributor. The required participants depend on the student's family circumstances. Participating as a contributor does not create an obligation to pay tuition.\n\n| Student or family situation | Required participation |\n|---|---|\n| Dependent student who must provide parent information | Student and required parent contributors |\n| Independent student | Parent information is generally not required |\n| Married student who did not file a joint 2024 return with the current spouse | The spouse must participate separately |\n| Parent who filed a joint 2024 return with the current spouse | Generally, one parent participates as a contributor |\n| Parents who did not file jointly, or unmarried legal parents who live together | Check whether the other parent or spouse must also participate |\n| Divorced or separated parents | Use the parent who provided more financial support during the most recent 12 months |\n\nIf the parents provided equal amounts of support or provided no support, use the parent with the greater income and assets. If the selected parent has remarried, check whether the new spouse's information is also required. Do not select a parent merely because you live with that parent. Follow the [parent information guidance in the 2026-27 FAFSA form](https://studentaid.gov/sites/default/files/2026-27-fafsa-form.pdf) for specific determinations.\n\nLiving separately or earning your own living expenses does not by itself make you an independent student. A parent's simple refusal to complete the form is also not grounds for independent status. If abuse or estrangement makes contact difficult, explain the situation to the college. The college will decide under the [special circumstances review guidance](https://fsapartners.ed.gov/knowledge-center/fsa-handbook/2026-2027/application-and-verification-guide/ch5-special-cases).\n\n## How to Apply Online\n\nStart the 2026-27 form using the student's own account. The official application channel is the FAFSA page on StudentAid.gov. The U.S. Department of Education recommends that the student complete the student's section first.\n\n1. **Log in with the student's account.** Start a new form on the FAFSA page. Select the 2026-27 award year. Select Student as the person completing the form.\n2. **Enter your personal and financial information.** Confirm your state of residence and family circumstances. Consent to the transfer of federal tax information. Consent is required even if you did not file a tax return.\n3. **Add the schools that should receive your information.** You can add up to 20 schools to the online form. You may include schools before being admitted. Follow any instructions about school order for state aid.\n4. **Invite the required contributors.** Enter their email addresses to send invitations. You may also share the invitation link or code. Each person must participate using their own account.\n5. **Check consent, signatures, and submission status.** Every required participant must complete their own section. Do not assume the submission is complete based only on the student's signature. Keep the submission confirmation screen and email.\n\nThe student first invites one required parent. If the other parent must participate, the first parent will receive instructions to send an additional invitation. See the U.S. Department of Education's [application steps for students](https://studentaid.gov/articles/fafsa-student-steps/) for guidance on each screen.\n\n## Comparing Federal, State, and College Deadlines\n\nThe deadline you actually need to meet is the earliest deadline among the aid programs you plan to apply for. Even when you submit the FAFSA once, each aid provider conducts its own review. States and colleges may require separate applications. Distinguish between priority deadlines and final deadlines.\n\n| Category | What the deadline means | What to check |\n|---|---|---|\n| Federal FAFSA | Final deadline for receiving the federal aid application | June 30, 2027 |\n| State aid | Application and processing deadlines for your state of residence and individual programs | Separate applications, funding availability, and supplemental documents |\n| College aid | Priority or final deadline set by the college | Additional forms and documents in the college portal |\n| Federal application corrections | Deadline for correcting an application already submitted | Separate from the deadline for new applications |\n\nThe U.S. Department of Education's [2026-27 FAFSA form](https://studentaid.gov/sites/default/files/2026-27-fafsa-form.pdf) states the submission deadline as follows.\n\n\u003e We must receive your application no later than June 30, 2027.\n\u003e\n\u003e U.S. Department of Education, 2026-27 FAFSA form\n\nThe federal online submission deadline is 11:59 p.m. Central Time. Transmission and receipt must be completed before the deadline. The student's last date of attendance also applies to the college's receipt of the record. If your term ends early, ask the college about its processing deadline first.\n\nThe federal deadline for receiving corrections is September 11, 2027 (U.S.). This does not mean that new applications are allowed through that date. You must also meet the separate deadlines set by colleges and aid programs. The source is the [June 22, 2026 federal deadline notice](https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2026-06-22/pdf/2026-12462.pdf).\n\n## Remaining State Application and Document Deadlines\n\nAs of September 18, 2026, application deadlines remain open in some states. However, distinguish between new applications and supplemental documents from existing applicants. The dates below alone do not confirm eligibility or remaining funding.\n\n| State and aid program | Remaining deadline or standard | What to check now |\n|---|---|---|\n| Ohio, OCOG | October 1, 2026 | FAFSA submission and the college's confirmation of aid eligibility |\n| Mississippi, MTAG and MESG | October 15, 2026 | Supplemental document deadline for applicants who applied on time |\n| New Jersey, fall and spring aid applicants | October 1, 2026 document completion deadline | Individual tasks shown in NJFAMS and exceptions based on the notice date |\n| Arkansas, ArFuture spring term | January 10, 2027 | Spring term aid and separate application requirements |\n| New Jersey, spring term only | February 15, 2027 | Completion of FAFSA or state alternative application processing |\n| Tennessee, State Lottery spring term | March 1, 2027 | Term-specific eligibility for the applicable scholarship program |\n| Tennessee, State Lottery summer term | May 1, 2027 | Summer term aid requirements |\n| New York, TAP | June 30, 2027 | Complete the TAP application separately |\n| Louisiana | July 1, 2027 listed on the federal form | First meet the June 30 federal FAFSA deadline |\n| Minnesota, State Grant and North Star Promise | By the 30th day of the applicable term | Actual date based on the start date of your term |\n\nThe basic schedule by state appears on [page 2 of the 2026-27 FAFSA form](https://studentaid.gov/sites/default/files/2026-27-fafsa-form.pdf). For Ohio, also review the [2026-27 OCOG guidance](https://dam.assets.ohio.gov/image/upload/highered.ohio.gov/sgs/guidance-memos/FA27-001.pdf). For New York, the deadline is available in [HESC's 2026-27 application notice](https://hesc.ny.gov/about/news-releases/governor-hochul-announces-opening-key-new-york-state-college-aid-applications).\n\n### Is Mississippi's October 15 Deadline for New Applications?\n\nThe October 15 deadline for MTAG and MESG is the supplemental document deadline. The deadline for the state MAAPP application was September 15, 2026. Submitting the FAFSA alone does not complete the MAAPP application. The [MTAG information](https://www.msfinancialaid.org/programs/mtag-mississippi-tuition-assistance-grant/) and [MESG information](https://www.msfinancialaid.org/programs/mesg-mississippi-eminent-scholars-grant/) distinguish between the two deadlines.\n\nThe state announced a cybersecurity incident on September 10, 2026. The notice kept the September 15 application deadline unchanged. It also explained that processing and payments could be delayed. If your submission status is updated late, review the [state's follow-up notice](https://www.msfinancialaid.org/board-reports/network-security-incident/).\n\n### Is Meeting the Submission Date Enough in New Jersey?\n\nNew Jersey uses the processing date after all required consents and signatures have been completed. Finishing the form on the deadline itself may be too late. You must also complete the document tasks in the state NJFAMS portal separately.\n\n- The fall and spring renewal deadline for 2025-26 TAG recipients was April 15, 2026.\n- The deadline for other fall and spring applicants was September 15, 2026.\n- Applications for the spring term only must be processed by February 15, 2027.\n- Spring term document completion is due by March 1, 2027 or within 30 days after the initial notice.\n\nDocuments for new fall and spring applicants are also subject to the standard of 30 days after the initial notice. Submitting incomplete documents does not automatically extend the deadline. Review [HESAA's 2026-27 schedule](https://www.hesaa.org/Pages/StateDeadlinesNextAY.aspx) for applicant categories and individual deadlines.\n\n### How Do I Check a State Not Listed in the Table?\n\nNot appearing in the table does not mean applications are closed. Some states instruct applicants to ask their colleges about deadlines. Other states provide aid while funding remains available. Start with the state list in the federal form.\n\n1. Find the entry for your state of residence in the FAFSA form.\n2. Check the aid program you want to apply for with the state agency.\n3. Confirm the distinctions between new and renewal applications and between fall and spring terms.\n4. Ask the college's financial aid office about remaining aid and additional documents.\n\nMissing a priority deadline may put you at a disadvantage for some aid. However, it does not mean that all federal aid is no longer available. The U.S. Department of Education's [deadline guidance](https://studentaid.gov/articles/3-fafsa-deadlines/) also explains federal aid options for late applicants.\n\n## Comparing Grants, Work-Study, and Loans\n\nThe FAFSA is a common application, not a service that pays aid directly. Colleges use the application information to present financial aid offers. Repayment obligations and payment methods differ by type of aid.\n\n| Type of aid | Meaning | Conditions to check |\n|---|---|---|\n| Grants such as the Federal Pell Grant | Educational aid that generally does not have to be repaid | Amount based on eligibility and enrollment status, and exceptions requiring repayment |\n| Federal Work-Study | Wages earned through work | Amount allocated by the school and actual job availability |\n| Federal student loans | Borrowed funds that must be repaid | Loan type, interest, limits, and acceptance process |\n| State and college aid | Scholarships, grants, and other aid established by each institution | Separate applications and institution-specific reviews |\n\nDo not treat a work-study allocation as a scholarship paid in a lump sum. Compare loans separately from grants as well. Review the college's offer for the specific aid amounts. The types of aid are explained in the U.S. Department of Education's [financial aid guide](https://studentaid.gov/sa/sites/default/files/do-you-need-money.pdf).\n\n## Reviewing the Submission Summary and Changing Schools\n\nAfter the FAFSA is processed, review the submission summary in the student's account. The document is called the FAFSA Submission Summary. It is not a document for a parent or spouse to access on the student's behalf. The aid amounts shown may differ from the college's final offer.\n\n1. Log in to StudentAid.gov and select the application under My Activity.\n2. Review the entered information and school list in the submission summary.\n3. Check Next Steps for missing items or requests for additional confirmation.\n4. If you need to add or change schools, use Make a Correction.\n5. After making corrections, check the submission and processing status again.\n\nThe Student Aid Index, or SAI, is a measure used to assess financial need. It does not mean the amount the family will actually have to pay. See the U.S. Department of Education's [submission summary guidance](https://studentaid.gov/articles/fafsa-submission-summary/) for the difference between the submission summary and a college offer.\n\nIf a college requests verification documents, submit them to that college. Being selected for verification does not mean your application is considered fraudulent. Not every correction can be made online. You can review the scope of available corrections in the [guidance on what happens after submission](https://studentaid.gov/articles/things-after-fafsa/).\n\n## What If Household Income Has Decreased?\n\nIf your income has decreased since 2024, request a review from the college after submitting the FAFSA. Do not substitute current income for 2024 income on your own. A college may adjust the information used to calculate aid based on individual circumstances.\n\n1. Submit the FAFSA using 2024 information as instructed on the application.\n2. Explain changes such as reduced income or major medical expenses to the college.\n3. Prepare any income, unemployment, or expense documentation requested by the college.\n4. Review the college's decision and revised financial aid offer.\n\nThis process is called an adjustment based on professional judgment. The English term is professional judgment. The college decides whether to make an adjustment and determines the result individually. The scope is described in the [2026-27 special circumstances review guidance](https://fsapartners.ed.gov/knowledge-center/fsa-handbook/2026-2027/application-and-verification-guide/ch5-special-cases).\n\n## When Parents Earn Income in Korea\n\nA parent's Korean income must also be reported as required by the applicable questions. Foreign tax information cannot be transferred automatically from the U.S. IRS. Do not enter income as 0 merely because the parent did not file a U.S. tax return.\n\n1. Prepare the parent's 2024 income and tax information.\n2. Select the option that applies to a foreign tax return or foreign income.\n3. Convert the applicable amounts to U.S. dollars and enter them in the required fields.\n4. Ask the college if it is unclear how items correspond or which conversion standard to use.\n\nConsent to the transfer of tax information is required even if the Korean information is not transferred automatically. Follow the [2026-27 FAFSA completion instructions](https://fsapartners.ed.gov/knowledge-center/fsa-handbook/2026-2027/application-and-verification-guide/ch2-filling-out-fafsa-form) when entering foreign income. It is also advisable to keep the information used for the currency conversion.\n\nA parent can create a contributor account even without an SSN. The student's federal aid eligibility is not determined solely by the parent's citizenship status. Check the student's own eligibility separately from the parent's participation requirements. Related guidance is available on the U.S. Department of Education's [FAFSA process page](https://financialaidtoolkit.ed.gov/tk/learn/fafsa.jsp).\n\n## Common Application Mistakes\n\nDo not treat application completion and aid confirmation as the same status. Even after the FAFSA is processed, state or college follow-up steps may remain. Review the items below after submission.\n\n| Common misunderstanding | Fact to check |\n|---|---|\n| Meeting the federal deadline allows you to apply for every scholarship | State and college deadlines are separate |\n| Sending a parent an invitation completes the application | Required fields, consent, signatures, and submission status must be checked |\n| New Mississippi applications are allowed through October 15 | MTAG and MESG applications were due September 15, with documents due October 15 |\n| SAI is the actual tuition bill | It is a measure used to assess financial need |\n| Because I lost my job this year, I should change my 2024 income to 0 | Submit the original information, then request an adjustment from the college |\n| If I am ineligible for federal aid, I am also ineligible for state aid | Check state alternative applications and eligibility requirements |\n\nSome states provide separate application paths for undocumented students and others. One example is the California Dream Act Application. New Jersey also has a state alternative application. Check eligibility for federal aid and state aid separately.","content_html":"\u003cp\u003eApply for the 2026-27 FAFSA for free at StudentAid.gov. Prepare your account and 2024 income information.
