# Electric Heating Mat Storage and Checks Before Reuse

> Follow the instructions for your model when folding, rolling or cleaning an electric heating mat. Avoid pressure and moisture during storage, and check the cover, wires, connections and controller operation before using it again.

## Key Points

- Use the model name on the product label to find the manufacturer's manual and check how to store the mat and detach the controller.
- Turn off the power, unplug the mat and let it cool completely.
- Clean it as directed in the manual and let it dry completely, then store it away from pressure and moisture.
- Before using it again, check the cover, power cord, plug and connections without connecting it to power.
- If there is no damage, check its operation as directed in the manual, and stop using it if anything is abnormal.

For an electric heating mat, first check the model's manual to see whether folding or rolling is allowed. Before storing it, let it cool completely and keep it away from moisture and pressure. If you find damage or notice a burning smell when you take it out again, stop using it and ask the manufacturer to inspect it.

The storage and inspection guidelines follow the Winter 2021 issue of *SAFETY KOREA* and the manufacturer's manual.

## What to Prepare and Check in the Manual Before You Start

Have the product label and the user manual for your model ready. If you do not have the manual, look for it in the resources section of the manufacturer's website. If you have trouble finding the model, send a photo of the label to the official customer service center and ask for help.

Check the following:

- Manufacturer and model name on the mat's label
- Whether folding or rolling is allowed, and the storage illustrations
- Whether the controller is detachable, and how to detach it
- Whether washing with water is allowed, and how to dry the product
- Compatible bedding and conditions that require you to stop using the product

Do not use another model's manual as a substitute, even if it is the same brand. Do not judge whether folding is allowed based only on the product's size. If the storage method is unclear, check with the manufacturer before forcing it into a fold.

## When an Electric Heating Mat Can Be Folded for Storage

Whether you can fold the mat for storage depends on the storage instructions for that model. *SAFETY KOREA*, the quarterly publication of the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, advises rolling it up. This is because a bent internal heating wire can short-circuit and cause an electric shock or fire. The fire authorities' *Winter Heating Appliance Safety Manual* also warns that storing the mat folded or placing heavy objects on it can cause a short circuit or fold and break the heating wire, creating a fire risk. In contrast, the manual for the DU-PLEX electric blanket Q·SS specifies folding it for storage.

| Condition checked | Storage decision | Precautions |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The model's manual allows folding | Follow the folding method in the manual | Store it where other objects will not press down on it |
| The model's manual instructs you to roll it | Roll it in the specified direction and shape | Prevent kinks in the cord and connections |
| The manual does not specify a storage method | Ask the manufacturer which methods are allowed | Do not force it into a fold to fit your storage space |
| Damage is found on the outer covering or cord | Check whether repairs are possible before storage | Do not leave the damage unaddressed until the next use |

Permission to store the product folded does not mean you can use it while folded. The DU-PLEX manual also instructs users to unfold it for use. Distinguish between the conditions for storage and those for switching it on.

## Steps for Storing an Electric Heating Mat

Disconnect the power and let the product cool completely before cleaning it. Follow the instructions for your model when washing and drying it. A marking that allows washing with water does not necessarily mean the controller can also be washed.

1. Turn off the power and unplug it from the outlet. Hold the plug body, not the cord, when unplugging it.
2. Wait until the product has cooled completely. Do not put it away while it is hot.
3. If the controller is detachable, remove it as instructed in the manual. If you are unsure whether it detaches, do not pull it by force.
4. Remove dirt using an approved method. If you wash the product, it must meet the drying conditions in the manual.
5. Fold or roll it as instructed for storage. Do not place heavy items on top.
6. Arrange the cord and connections so they are not compressed or kinked. Avoid damp locations.

The user manual for the DU-PLEX electric blanket Q·SS gives the following instruction:

> Keep the cord from kinking during storage.

Vacuum storage bags are not suitable for every model, either. The sleepmate manual provides instructions for storage in a vacuum bag. For other products, check with the manufacturer to see whether compression is allowed.

## Steps for Checking an Electric Heating Mat for Safety

Check the condition of a stored product before plugging it in. The fire authorities' *Winter Heating Appliance Safety Manual* also advises checking products before use. These checks include cord damage and product wear.

1. Unfold the product without connecting it to power.
2. Check the parts listed in the table below. If you see damage, do not test its operation.
3. If there are no problems, connect it as instructed in the manual. Do not switch it on while it is wet.
4. Stay nearby and check that the controller works properly. Follow the model-specific instructions for the test temperature and duration.
5. Stop using it if it produces abnormal heat or a burning smell. Ask the manufacturer's official service center to inspect it.

| Part to check | Problems to look for | What to do if found |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Outer covering and seams | Tears, severe wear, heat deformation | Do not use it; contact the manufacturer |
| Power cord | Stripped insulation, cracks, deformation from pressure | Do not connect the power; ask about repairs |
| Plug and outlet | Damage, scorch marks, loose connections | Do not use it with the connection in that condition |
| Connection between the mat and controller | Breakage, looseness, moisture | Do not connect it until its condition has been checked |
| Temperature controller | Damaged casing, recurring errors, control problems | Request an inspection from the official service center |
| Product during operation | Burning smell, abnormal heat in a localized area | Stop using it and request an inspection |

A visual check does not guarantee the safety of the internal heating wires. The fact that the product powers on is not proof that it is working properly, either. Do not attempt your own repair of a damaged cord and continue using it.

## If Controllers Have Been Mixed Up or the Manual Is Lost

Do not connect a controller until you have confirmed that it matches the mat. The sleepmate manual requires the use of the dedicated controller and adapter. Matching connector shapes alone do not establish compatibility.

1. Photograph the labels on both the mat and the controller.
2. Ask the manufacturer's customer service center whether the two parts are compatible.
3. Obtain the manual for that model, then check how to connect them.
4. When storing the product, keep the mat and its matching controller together as a set.

Keeping the parts organized this way follows the principle of using dedicated parts. Photos or notes can help you identify the model the next time you use it. Place the controller where it will not press down on the mat.

## Common Mistakes and Correct Judgments

Avoid assuming the product is safe based only on its storage condition or indicator light. Even products with an automatic shutoff feature must be checked for damage. After confirming that the product works properly, you must still follow the conditions of use in the manual.

| Common assumption | What you need to check |
| --- | --- |
| It worked well last year, so I can switch it on right away | Check the condition of the cord and controller again after storage |
| If the outside is clean, the inside must be fine | The condition of the internal heating wires cannot be determined from appearance alone |
| If the indicator light turns on, it is working properly | You also need to check temperature control and signs of problems |
| A product that allows folding can be used while folded | Storage conditions and conditions of use are separate |
| It is fine to press it down with other items to reduce its size | Pressure can cause damage, so do not stack heavy objects on it |
| It can be left unattended if it has an automatic shutoff feature | Disconnect the power when it is not in use |

Avoid using a high temperature setting while sleeping, too. Low-temperature burns can occur even at relatively low temperatures after prolonged contact. Do not put the controller under the covers.

## Differences Between Product Types and Purchase Labels

An electric heating mat is a heating appliance that generates heat by passing electricity through internal heating wires. A hot-water heating mat circulates heated water through hoses. Their structures differ, so the items to check before storage are not the same.

| Category | What to check before storage |
| --- | --- |
| Electric heating mats and electric blankets | Whether the heated section can be folded, cleaning methods, and controller removal |
| Hot-water heating mats | How to handle the water, care for the boiler, and check for hose kinks and leaks |
| Buying a new product | Actual dimensions, compatible bedding, storage method, and repair contact |

Do not judge ease of maintenance based only on price or the stated number of users. To determine whether a product fits your storage space, compare the storage methods in the manuals as well. Also check for bedding that must not be used with it, such as latex bedding.

Information about electromagnetic waves is available from the National Radio Research Agency's “Electromagnetic Waves in Everyday Life.” Electromagnetic wave measurement results cannot tell you whether a cord was damaged during storage. Check separately for physical damage before using the product again.

## How to Dispose of Products That Are Difficult to Repair

Before disposing of a product, check the collection rules in your area. Korea's “Bunriui Jeongseok” recommends using the free home pickup service. It explains that if this service is not available, the product should be disposed of as bulky waste.

1. Check the product category in “Bunriui Jeongseok.” Jade heating mats are classified as ineligible for free home pickup.
2. Contact the free home pickup service for waste electrical appliances to confirm whether your product can actually be collected.
3. If home pickup is not available, follow your local government's bulky waste disposal procedure.

If your local government specifies a separate disposal method, follow it. Check local guidance for fees and disposal locations as well. Do not pass a damaged product on to someone else under the assumption that it is in working order.

## FAQ

### Should all products be rolled up?
Public safety guidance recommends rolling them up for storage. However, some models specify folding for storage. Check the manual for your model.

### Should I throw it away immediately if it has creases?
Creases alone are not enough to determine whether it should be discarded. If you suspect damage or deformation, do not connect it to power. Describe its condition to the manufacturer and request an inspection.

### Can I put it in a compression bag?
Some products provide instructions for storage in vacuum bags. Before using the same method for another model, check with the manufacturer whether compression is allowed.

### Must I always detach the controller before storage?
Whether and how the controller can be detached must be checked for each model. Even if it is detachable, disconnect the power first. If the connector will not come out, do not pull it by force.

### Can I wash it in a washing machine?
Whether machine washing is allowed depends on the model. Check the washing symbols and instructions in the manual supplied with the product. If the instructions conflict, contact the manufacturer.

### Is it safe if it turns on and warms up?
The fact that it turns on does not guarantee safety. A visual inspection of the exterior cannot establish the condition of the internal heating wires either. Stop using it if the controls malfunction or you notice a burning smell.

### How many minutes should I test it for when I first turn it on?
No single test duration can be specified for all products. Follow the pre-use check procedure for your model. If damage is found, request an inspection before testing the product's operation.

### Can I replace the controller with one that looks the same?
Do not judge compatibility by the shape of the connector alone. Give the manufacturer the model names of the main unit and the controller to confirm compatibility.

### Can I keep using it if a burning smell briefly appears and then goes away?
A burning smell is a signal to stop using it and request an inspection. Do not assume it is working normally just because the smell has disappeared.

### Can I skip checking for damage if a product claims to emit low levels of electromagnetic radiation?
Information about electromagnetic radiation and whether the wires are damaged must be checked separately. After storage, inspect the condition of the outer covering and connectors.
