Reading tools

Use them from the reading tools box at the top of each article, or from the bar that appears at the bottom of the screen while you read.

Listen

Articles with a prepared audio file can be played with an AI voice. The sentence being read is shown like a subtitle, and you can tap a sentence to play from there or change the playback speed.

How to use it

  1. Press [Play] in the reading tools box at the top of an article to open the listening window.
  2. Press the play button at the bottom of the window to start; the sentence being read is highlighted and the text follows along.
  3. Tap any sentence to start reading from there. You can also move with the previous/next buttons and the progress bar.

Good to know

  • Change the playback speed (0.75x to 2x) in the window.
  • Reopen it to continue where you left off. On phones, depending on the device and browser, you can also play or pause from the lock screen.
  • You can download the audio as an mp3 file.

Text view

Shows only the text, with the ads and images between paragraphs removed. Paragraphs are highlighted one by one at reading pace, and you can change the speed or download the article as a text file.

How to use it

  1. Press [View text] in the reading tools box at the top of an article to open a window with just the text, without the ads and images between paragraphs.
  2. Press play and paragraphs are highlighted one by one at reading pace.
  3. Move with the next/previous buttons, or tap a paragraph to jump straight to it.

Good to know

  • Choose the pace from six steps between 0.5x and 2x; the elapsed and total time and the time left in the current paragraph are shown too.
  • You can download the whole article as a text file (.txt).

Large text

Makes the text larger and the colors sharper. Choose from three sizes (small, medium, large); the setting is remembered in this browser and carries over to other articles.

How to use it

  1. Turn on the [Large text] switch in the reading tools box at the top of an article; text gets bigger and colors sharper.
  2. Pick a comfortable size from [Small, Medium, Large].
  3. Keep reading down the article, and use the up-arrow (Back to top) button that appears at the bottom right to return to the start.

Good to know

  • The setting and size are remembered in this browser and stay on when you open other articles.
  • You can also switch it on or off with the large text button in the bar at the bottom of the screen.

Sentence highlights

Pick sentences you like to keep in My highlights, or share a link that goes straight to a sentence. Sentences saved by several readers gather under Popular highlights at the end of the article.

How to use it

  1. Drag over a sentence in the article (long-press on a phone).
  2. Use [Copy link] in the toolbar to copy that sentence's address (no sign-in needed).
  3. Use [Save highlight] to keep it in My highlights (sign-in required).

Good to know

  • Add a note to each sentence in My highlights (up to 500 characters).
  • Save up to 50 sentences per article; saved sentences are marked when you reopen it.

Bottom bar

While you read, a bar appears at the bottom of the screen so you can open reading tools such as text view and large text, or share, like and comment, without scrolling back up. It steps aside at the start and the end of the article.

Read with confidence

Each article states how it was made and checked, and how to cite it.

Verification

The verification box under each article explains how it was checked, such as human review, figures corrected against source data and AI cross-checking of translations.

Sources and citation

Check the reuse terms under each article and use Copy citation to copy a citation that credits the source. We welcome search indexing and AI citation with attribution.

Finding articles

Find something to read and switch to the view that suits you.

Categories and tags

Browse articles by type (category) and by detailed topic (tag). Tapping a tag under an article takes you to articles on the same topic.

A space where articles on a theme are gathered so you can read them one after another, like a blog.

Topic sites that gather articles on one field. Some sites also offer tools for that field.

Choose between scrolling continuously through the article list or moving page by page. Your choice is remembered in this browser.

Four languages

Available in Korean, English, Japanese and Spanish. Switch the language at the top of the screen; articles not yet translated into your language are shown in their original language.

Dark mode

Switch between a light and a dark screen with the button at the top of the screen.

Get new articles by email. You can choose how articles appear in the email and unsubscribe at any time.

How to use it

  1. Enter your email on the newsletter page to subscribe.
  2. Use the links in the email to change the language and the display style (Standard, Magazine, Newspaper, Report, Course).
  3. Click the [Unsubscribe] link at the bottom of any email, then press [Unsubscribe] once more on the page that opens.

Good to know

  • On days with something new, one email a day brings new articles, binder updates and the most-read articles.
  • Issues may also include articles about affiliate products (advertising).
  • Each email also includes new articles from our other services, not just this site.
