Products & Shopping

What to check before buying is not the advertising copy but the pack and the price. Here we put the count and volume, the price and delivery terms and the aggregate rating from the sales page into one table and work out which option is the better buy.

From bottled water, food, detergent and toothbrushes to seasonal items and gift sets, the more often you rebuy something the more the difference in unit price adds up. Every price is recorded with the date it was checked, and discounts, coupons and bundle deals come with their conditions so you can read them as that day's price.

We do not write as if we had used the product. Only what the listing and the aggregate ratings say goes in, and any article with affiliate links says so first.

Bundle Unit Price Comparator

Enter price, discount, shipping and pack size to compare what two products really cost per the same amount.

Example: 500 mL × 24 for $12.00 vs 2 L × 6 for $10.80 means B is 10% cheaper.

Bundle Unit Price Comparator

Enter the two products exactly as the store shows them. Discounts and shipping are included, and the money you actually pay is divided by the same amount. Nothing you enter is stored.

Example and how it is calculated

Formulas

  • Total amount = packs × size per pack × unit conversion factor
  • Amount paid = listed price - discount + shipping
  • Unit price = amount paid ÷ total amount × comparison amount

The same 12 L sold in two different packs.

Product Amount paid Price per 100 mL
Product A 500 mL × 24 $12.00 $0.10
Product B 2 L × 6 $10.80 $0.09

By the same volume, B is 10% cheaper than A.

Good to know

  • Weight (g) and volume (mL) cannot be converted without density, so they are not compared. Enter both products in the same kind of unit.
  • Entering the price before discount plus the discount is kept separate from entering the final amount paid. The final amount already includes discounts, so they are not subtracted again.
  • Card spending conditions, the cash value of reward points and automatic price collection from stores are not included.
  • The ranking and the difference are decided with values before rounding.
