September 2026 Android Drop: Eligibility and Setup

If you have Android 16 or later, you can check the storage location memory feature for Gemini and Find Hub. Motion Assist requires Android 17 or later. There is no separate application deadline; update your settings and Google apps, then check whether the features have been rolled out to you.

How to Activate Android Drop

First, update the operating system and related Google apps to the latest versions. Features may be rolled out gradually by account and device. Even if you meet the eligibility requirements, the menus may not be available on the day of the announcement.

1. Check your Android version.
   Open About phone or About tablet in Settings. Under Android version, check whether you have Android 16 or Android 17.
2. Check for system updates.
   Run System update or Software update in Settings. Menu names may vary by manufacturer.
3. Update the related Google apps.
   Check for updates to Gemini, Find Hub, Google Messages, and Google Keep. Also install the Google Play system update.
4. Check the Find Hub integration.
   On Android 16 or later, ask Gemini to remember where an item is stored. Then ask again where that item is to check whether the integration has been activated.
5. Turn on Motion Assist.
   Enter Motion Assist in the Settings search bar on a device running Android 17 or later. If it appears in the search results, open the menu and enable the feature.
6. Check the Google Messages feature.
   Open a conversation and look for the shared Keep note option in the additional menu. If it appears, you can create a note and edit it with the conversation participants.
7. Recheck features that do not appear.
   Restart the device, then check the app menus again. If the features are still unavailable, you may need to wait for the rollout in your country, language, or account.

Requirements by Feature

Android version requirements differ by feature. Country and language restrictions may also apply separately. The table below distinguishes between requirements confirmed in the announcement and items that require additional verification.

Do not make assumptions about features for which the announcement does not specify a version number. Check Google’s announcement notes together with the relevant app’s help documentation. Whether the actual menu appears is also a criterion.

How to Activate Motion Assist

Motion Assist should be checked on Android 17 or later. It is designed to reduce discomfort that may occur when viewing the screen while in motion. The timing of menu availability may vary by device.

1. Open the Settings app.
2. Enter Motion Assist in the search bar at the top.
3. Select Motion Assist from the search results.
4. Turn on the feature switch.
5. If necessary, review the displayed permissions or operating instructions.

If there are no search results, it does not mean that your device is broken. If you have a version earlier than Android 17, you do not meet the operating system requirement. Even on Android 17 or later, the gradual rollout may not yet be complete.

Creating a Shared Keep Note in Google Messages

When the shared note menu appears, you can create a Keep note within a conversation. Participants can edit the same note in supported environments. Update both Google Messages and Keep before using the feature.

1. In Google Messages, open the conversation where you want to collaborate.
2. Tap the additional menu near the message field.
3. Select the shared Keep note option.
4. Enter a title and content to create the note.
5. Open the note from the conversation to review edits.

If the Keep option does not appear, check the app update status again. The rollout may not yet be complete for your account. Menu names and locations may vary by app version.

Example

You can first identify which features are available based on the Android version alone. For example, consider a device running Android 16.

• Gemini·Find Hub: It meets the Android 16 or later requirement.
• Motion Assist: It does not meet the Android 17 or later requirement.
• Shared Keep notes: Check whether the menu appears in Google Messages.
• Guided Vision·chat themes: Check the country, language, and account rollout status.

In this case, there is no need to search repeatedly for the Motion Assist menu. First, check whether an Android 17 update is available. For the other features, update the apps and determine availability based on whether the actual menus appear.

Comparing Android Drop with Other Updates

Android Drop is not the same as a complete operating system upgrade. Changes to Google apps or services may be rolled out alongside it. It should also be distinguished from Pixel-only changes.

Inclusion in an Android Drop announcement does not mean a feature is installed immediately on every Android device. OS version and hardware requirements apply first. Country, language, and account requirements may also differ by feature.

What a Gradual Rollout Means

A gradual rollout means that a feature does not become available on all supported devices on the same day. Even if you have installed the latest app version, server-side activation may still be pending. You cannot assume that manual installation alone will move you ahead in the rollout sequence.

Use the following steps to determine the status.

1. Check whether you meet the required Android version.
2. Install system and Google app updates.
3. Restart the device.
4. Check whether the feature menu actually appears.
5. If it does not appear, check the official announcement and app help documentation again.

Common Mistakes

The most common misunderstanding is treating Android Drop as an Android 17 upgrade. The two updates have different rollout scopes and channels. Also be careful about the following:

• Looking for Motion Assist on Android 16
• Expecting Pixel Drop features on every Android device
• Assuming a feature will be activated immediately just because the app is up to date
• Failing to check Guided Vision’s country and language requirements
• Updating only Google Messages while leaving Keep on an older version
• Installing an unofficial APK because the menu is unavailable

Eligibility requirements and rollout completion should be assessed separately. Meeting the requirements does not mean immediate availability. Unofficial installation files may increase security risks to your account and device.

Privacy and Collaborative Editing Checks

Storage locations and shared notes may contain personal information. Check the account and conversation participants before enabling the features. This should be reviewed separately from feature availability.

• Do not unnecessarily store detailed locations of sensitive items in Find Hub.
• Make sure Gemini is using the correct Google account.
• Check the conversation participants before creating a shared note.
• Do not enter passwords or financial information in shared notes.
• Manually remove location information and notes you no longer use.

What to Check When a Feature Does Not Appear

If a feature is unavailable, check the OS version first and proceed in order. Checking updates and rollout status should come before resetting the device.

1. Check whether the Android version meets the feature requirements.
2. Check the Android security update and Google Play system update.
3. Update all related Google apps.
4. Check whether the app and device languages are supported.
5. Check whether you are using a work- or school-managed account.
6. Restart the device, then search for the menu.
7. Recheck the country and language notes in the official announcement.

A factory reset is not a standard activation procedure. During a gradual rollout, resetting the device does not guarantee that the feature will appear immediately. It is safer to wait until the official eligibility requirements are confirmed.
