Empathetic conversation starts with listening before offering advice. Briefly reflect back what the other person says and check whether you understood their feelings correctly. Distinguishing AI's warm responses from trust between people can help you choose how to respond to family members and colleagues.
The research findings described here are based on a paper released on June 25, 2025.
What is an empathetic conversation?
An empathetic conversation seeks to understand another person's experience from their perspective. Briefly restating what you heard is called reflective listening. You can check the other person's response to see whether you understood what they meant.
Simple acknowledgments and reflective listening serve different purposes. An acknowledgment signals that you are still listening. Reflective listening shows specifically what you understood.
| Type of response | Practice phrase | Role in the conversation |
|---|---|---|
| Acknowledgment | So that happened. | Signals that you are listening |
| Restating the situation | You didn't get a chance to explain what you had prepared. | Checks the key point of the event |
| Checking feelings | Did you feel hurt that your opinion wasn't addressed? | Checks your guess about their feelings |
| Checking what would help | Would you rather I keep listening for now? | Checks what response the other person wants |
Principles of listening can be found in Chapter 3 of SAMHSA's TIP 35. That document explains listening methods used in motivational interviewing. The sample conversations below are practice phrases that apply those principles to everyday life. The therapeutic effects of counseling should not be assumed to apply unchanged to everyday conversation. TIP 35 Chapter 3
Ask whether the other person wants you to keep listening or offer advice.
How can AI's expressions of empathy help?
AI's expressions of empathy can make users feel heard. AI companions are conversation services designed for emotional interaction. Replika is one such service.
The paper AI Companions Reduce Loneliness reported reduced loneliness after conversations. Feeling heard was a factor that explained this effect. However, the study did not test whether AI experiences emotions.
In a one-week experiment included in the paper, relief immediately after a conversation occurred repeatedly. No evidence was observed that the effect lasted during periods without conversation. Temporary comfort should therefore be distinguished from lasting improvement in loneliness. Original study
These findings alone do not show that AI is better at empathy than people. Warm responses and accurate advice also need to be evaluated separately. Do not assume an answer is factually correct just because it was comforting.
How to start an empathetic conversation
Listen to the other person, check what you understood, and then offer help. You can use the following steps when a family member or colleague shares a concern. Focus on adjusting your response to what they say rather than following a fixed script.
- Listen until the other person finishes speaking. Do not miss what they say next because you are preparing a rebuttal or solution.
- Briefly restate the main point. Do not add intentions or causes that the other person has not mentioned.
- Check whether you have guessed their feelings correctly. If they say you have not, revise your interpretation.
- Ask what kind of help they need. Check whether they want to talk more or look for a solution together.
- Offer suggestions when they want advice. Leave room for the other person to decide whether to follow them.
When a family member talks about a tiring day
Start by finding out what was difficult rather than offering a solution. The following is a practice conversation, not a real case. It includes a moment when the other person corrects an assumption about their feelings.
- Other person: Work kept piling up today, and I'm exhausted.
- Listener: Did all that work piling up put a lot of pressure on you?
- Other person: It wasn't so much the pressure. I felt hurt that I was handling it alone.
- Listener: You felt hurt about having to handle it alone.
- Listener: Would you rather I keep listening for now?
The key part of this conversation is correcting the first guess about the person's feelings. Empathy is not a test of whether you can guess someone's innermost feelings on the first try. Practice listening in a way that lets you correct a mistaken interpretation.
