For an electric heating mat, first check the model's manual to see whether folding or rolling is allowed. Before storing it, let it cool completely and keep it away from moisture and pressure. If you find damage or notice a burning smell when you take it out again, stop using it and ask the manufacturer to inspect it.
The storage and inspection guidelines follow the Winter 2021 issue of SAFETY KOREA and the manufacturer's manual.
What to Prepare and Check in the Manual Before You Start
Have the product label and the user manual for your model ready. If you do not have the manual, look for it in the resources section of the manufacturer's website. If you have trouble finding the model, send a photo of the label to the official customer service center and ask for help.
Check the following:
- Manufacturer and model name on the mat's label
- Whether folding or rolling is allowed, and the storage illustrations
- Whether the controller is detachable, and how to detach it
- Whether washing with water is allowed, and how to dry the product
- Compatible bedding and conditions that require you to stop using the product
Do not use another model's manual as a substitute, even if it is the same brand. Do not judge whether folding is allowed based only on the product's size. If the storage method is unclear, check with the manufacturer before forcing it into a fold.
Avoid pressure and moisture during storage.
When an Electric Heating Mat Can Be Folded for Storage
Whether you can fold the mat for storage depends on the storage instructions for that model. SAFETY KOREA, the quarterly publication of the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, advises rolling it up. This is because a bent internal heating wire can short-circuit and cause an electric shock or fire. The fire authorities' Winter Heating Appliance Safety Manual also warns that storing the mat folded or placing heavy objects on it can cause a short circuit or fold and break the heating wire, creating a fire risk. In contrast, the manual for the DU-PLEX electric blanket Q·SS specifies folding it for storage.
| Condition checked | Storage decision | Precautions |
|---|---|---|
| The model's manual allows folding | Follow the folding method in the manual | Store it where other objects will not press down on it |
| The model's manual instructs you to roll it | Roll it in the specified direction and shape | Prevent kinks in the cord and connections |
| The manual does not specify a storage method | Ask the manufacturer which methods are allowed | Do not force it into a fold to fit your storage space |
| Damage is found on the outer covering or cord | Check whether repairs are possible before storage | Do not leave the damage unaddressed until the next use |
Permission to store the product folded does not mean you can use it while folded. The DU-PLEX manual also instructs users to unfold it for use. Distinguish between the conditions for storage and those for switching it on.
Steps for Storing an Electric Heating Mat
Disconnect the power and let the product cool completely before cleaning it. Follow the instructions for your model when washing and drying it. A marking that allows washing with water does not necessarily mean the controller can also be washed.
- Turn off the power and unplug it from the outlet. Hold the plug body, not the cord, when unplugging it.
- Wait until the product has cooled completely. Do not put it away while it is hot.
- If the controller is detachable, remove it as instructed in the manual. If you are unsure whether it detaches, do not pull it by force.
- Remove dirt using an approved method. If you wash the product, it must meet the drying conditions in the manual.
- Fold or roll it as instructed for storage. Do not place heavy items on top.
- Arrange the cord and connections so they are not compressed or kinked. Avoid damp locations.
The user manual for the DU-PLEX electric blanket Q·SS gives the following instruction:
Keep the cord from kinking during storage.
Vacuum storage bags are not suitable for every model, either. The sleepmate manual provides instructions for storage in a vacuum bag. For other products, check with the manufacturer to see whether compression is allowed.
Steps for Checking an Electric Heating Mat for Safety
Check the condition of a stored product before plugging it in. The fire authorities' Winter Heating Appliance Safety Manual also advises checking products before use. These checks include cord damage and product wear.
- Unfold the product without connecting it to power.
- Check the parts listed in the table below. If you see damage, do not test its operation.
- If there are no problems, connect it as instructed in the manual. Do not switch it on while it is wet.
- Stay nearby and check that the controller works properly. Follow the model-specific instructions for the test temperature and duration.
- Stop using it if it produces abnormal heat or a burning smell. Ask the manufacturer's official service center to inspect it.
| Part to check | Problems to look for | What to do if found |
|---|---|---|
| Outer covering and seams | Tears, severe wear, heat deformation | Do not use it; contact the manufacturer |
| Power cord | Stripped insulation, cracks, deformation from pressure | Do not connect the power; ask about repairs |
| Plug and outlet | Damage, scorch marks, loose connections | Do not use it with the connection in that condition |
| Connection between the mat and controller | Breakage, looseness, moisture | Do not connect it until its condition has been checked |
| Temperature controller | Damaged casing, recurring errors, control problems | Request an inspection from the official service center |
| Product during operation | Burning smell, abnormal heat in a localized area | Stop using it and request an inspection |
A visual check does not guarantee the safety of the internal heating wires. The fact that the product powers on is not proof that it is working properly, either. Do not attempt your own repair of a damaged cord and continue using it.
