Water-Heated Bed Pad: Change Water and Reuse After Storage
Topping up and fully replacing the water serve different purposes. Check your model's manual for the correct water type and draining method, then check the pad for damage and leaks before reusing it after long-term storage.
Find the official user manual using the model name on the product label.
Distinguish between topping up low water, replacing all the water, and draining it before storage.
Turn off the heat and let the pad cool sufficiently before following the draining steps for your model.
After long-term storage, check the hoses and connections for damage.
Fill with fresh water as directed in the manual, then check for leaks and errors.
If your water-heated mat has been stored for a long time, check the hoses and connections first. Handle any remaining water according to the drainage instructions for your model. After filling it with fresh water, check for leaks and errors. Topping up when the water is low is different from replacing all the water.
The drainage guidance is based on the Steamboy FAQ dated August 21, 2026, and the user manuals for individual models.
Supplies and Official Manuals to Prepare Before Starting
First, find the manual using the model name on the product label. Drainage methods may differ even within the same brand. Steamboy provides manuals for individual models through customer support on its official store website.
· The full model name on the product label
· The user manual for that model
· A container to catch the drained water and a towel to wipe up moisture
· The drainage connector or air pump specified in the manual
· Fresh water of a type allowed by the manual
Water-heated mats circulate heated water inside the mat. This means you need to maintain both the boiler tank and the inside of the mat. Emptying only the boiler does not drain the entire system.
Comparing Topping Up, Full Water Replacement, and Draining Before Storage
Choose the right water maintenance task based on the current condition and when you plan to use the product next. Topping up means adding the amount that is missing. Full replacement means draining the existing water and replacing it with fresh water. Draining before storage prepares the product for a period without use.
Task | When it is needed | Purpose | What to check next
Topping up | The low-water signal specified in the manual appears | Add the missing amount | The signal to stop filling and any leaks
Full water replacement | The model's replacement guidance applies, or the water is contaminated | Replace the existing water with fresh water | How to drain the boiler and mat
Draining before storage | The product will not be used for a long time | Remove the water inside and dry the product | Handling residual water and how to store the product
Reuse after storage | Taking the product out after a long period in storage | Check for damage, then confirm normal operation | Hoses, connections, leaks, and errors
Steamboy's water maintenance FAQ gives the following guidance.
There is no fixed schedule for regularly replacing all the water. Steamboy FAQ, “When should I top up or drain the water in a water-heated mat?”
Do not apply this statement directly to products from other manufacturers. The replacement guidance for your model takes priority. If no interval is given, contact customer support with the model name.
Checking Water Types and Replacement Timing
Check your model's manual to find out what water to use. The Steamboy FAQ allows bottled drinking water, tap water, and filtered water. It advises against using seawater, groundwater, or saline solution. Additives such as cleaning agents or fragrances must not be used either.
Do not decide how often to replace the water in your water-heated mat based on an individual's Q&A response. First, check whether the manual specifies a replacement interval. Read the filter replacement guidance separately as well. Do not interpret the filter's service life as the water replacement interval.
· Check the manual for the types of water you can use.
· Look for a specified interval for replacing all the water.
· If there is a filter, check the filter maintenance section too.
· If foreign matter keeps appearing, ask the manufacturer how to inspect the product.
Do not add citric acid or detergent for cleaning on your own. Check whether the manufacturer allows the method you plan to use for internal cleaning. If a problem remains after replacing the water, have the product checked before restarting it.
Steps for Draining a Water-Heated Mat
Stop heating and let the water inside cool sufficiently before draining. Disconnecting a hose while the water is hot can cause burns. Manual and automatic drainage require different power settings.
Manual Drainage
Carry out manual drainage with the product unplugged. The instructions below are for Steamboy products that use an air pump. If your product has a different design, follow its model-specific manual.
· Turn off the power and unplug the product.
· Let the water in the boiler and mat cool sufficiently.
· Place a container to catch the water, then disconnect the hose from the boiler.
· Remove the boiler's water cap and filter as instructed in the manual.
· Tilt or turn the main unit upside down in the specified direction to drain it.
· Lay the mat flat and connect the specified drainage tool.
· For models that use an air pump, pump air into the indicated opening.
· Catch the water coming out of the other side in a container.
If the water does not drain easily, do not force it. Stop if you see damage to a connection. Ask the manufacturer's customer support about the drainage tool and the condition of the connections.
Automatic Drainage
For automatic drainage, follow the button instructions and connection sequence for your model. Some products need to remain connected to power to run this function. Applying the manual drainage procedure as-is may prevent it from working.
· Stop heating and let the water inside cool sufficiently.
· Prepare the dedicated drainage parts for the correct size.
· Check the required power state and connection sequence in the manual.
· Run the drainage function as instructed.
· Once it finishes, handle any remaining water according to the manual.
The Difference Between Turning Off the Power Button and Unplugging
Turning off the power button is not the same as unplugging the product. On the Steamboy S8000 S, the drain button is used while the power is turned off. The instructions say to unplug the power cord when removing residual water from the boiler. Even on the same product, the required power state changes depending on the step.
Task | Power state to check | What to follow or confirm
Stopping heating and cooling | Heating function turned off | Confirm that the water has cooled sufficiently
Manual drainage | Product unplugged | Manual drainage instructions
Automatic drainage | Power connected as needed for operation | Automatic drainage instructions for that model
Removing residual water after drainage | Power disconnected as specified in the manual | Whether automatic drainage has finished
Refilling | Model-specific installation sequence | Whether power is used during filling
Before starting, mark the power-related instructions in the manual separately. The wording in the general FAQ may differ from the model's manual. If the order in which to apply the instructions is unclear, check with the manufacturer before proceeding.
Steps for Reuse After Long-Term Storage
When reusing the product, inspect its exterior before adding water. Steamboy's storage FAQ advises checking the hoses and connectors for damage. After adding water, check for leaks too.
· Check the hoses and connectors for damage before connecting the power.
· Check that the power cord and plug are free of damage and moisture.
· Follow the model's drainage instructions to handle any remaining water.
· Spread out the mat and arrange the hoses so they are not kinked.
· Connect the boiler and mat as instructed in the manual.
· Operate the power controls in the sequence specified in the installation guide.
· Slowly add an allowed type of water and stop at the specified water level.
· Close the water cap and check for leaks at the connections and beneath the mat.
· Check whether the low-water signal and errors clear.
Top up the water in your water-heated mat according to the signals specified for the model. The Steamboy FAQ advises against adding water just because the water-level indicator lights have decreased. This guidance concerns products that give both a low-water indication and an audible warning. If the signals continue after you have added enough water, stop adding more.
Examples of Different Fill Volumes for the Same Queen Size
Even when the size is the same, the amount of water needed varies by model. The figures below are from the respective user manuals. They are not universal fill volumes to apply to other models.
Model | Size category in the manual | Water fill volume
Steamboy S8000 S | Queen | 1,300mL
Steamboy SM60·SM65·SM67 | Queen | 1,450mL
If water is already left inside, do not add the full amount shown in the table. The total fill volume is different from the amount currently needed for topping up. When adding water, follow your model's water-level guidance and stop-filling signals.
Checks Before Storing a Water-Heated Mat
Before long-term storage, drain the boiler and mat and let them dry thoroughly. Steamboy advises leaving no water or moisture behind. Whether to fold or roll the mat depends on its type.
Product category in the Steamboy FAQ | Storage method | Points to watch
Bed mat | Fold with the sleeping surface and pattern facing outward | Prevent sharp kinks in the connecting hose
Carpet mat | Roll with the patterned side facing outward | Prevent kinks in the connecting hose
All types | Keep away from moisture, direct sunlight, and heat sources | Do not place heavy objects on top
Do not apply these categories directly to products from other manufacturers. Check the storage instructions for your mat. Washing the cover and draining the inside are also separate maintenance tasks. Check the separate care label to see whether washing is allowed.
When to Stop Restarting the Product and Have It Checked
If there are leaks or recurring errors, stop using the product and contact the manufacturer. Do not assume it is operating normally just because you have replaced the water. On Steamboy's official store website, customer support links to product inquiries and after-sales service requests.
Condition found | Next action
The low-water indicator stays on despite sufficient water | Stop adding water and check the model-specific error guidance
Water leaks from a hose or connection | Stop using the product and contact official after-sales service
A connection is damaged or drainage is poor | Do not force it; ask about an inspection
The power section is wet or liquid has entered it | Do not touch the product, plug, or power cord; ask for help
A burning smell, smoke, or abnormal overheating occurs | Turn off the power if it is safe to do so, and do not restart
When making an inquiry, provide both the model name and the displayed error. Noting where the leak occurs and the circumstances also helps with the assessment. Even after normal operation resumes, follow the manual's precautions against low-temperature burns. Water maintenance alone cannot prevent burns from prolonged contact.
